How does Desertification occur?
There are a range of ways through which desertification occurs. Desertification can occur naturally, by drought, or it can be caused by human activities. A decrease in vegetation is a major cause of desertification, with a lack of plants causes changes to the land. Over cultivation and climate change is another major factor in desertification.
The farming of average land is another cause. This causes desertification worldwide and extracts the richness from the soil. People need to let the land replenish after it has been used instead of over farming. The destruction of plants in dry regions is deforestation. Deforestation is when trees are being cut down for fuel. If all the trees are gone there will be nothing protecting the soil causing desertification.
Overgrazing is another cause due to the animals not moving around and only staying in one spot. If people would move with their animals this would prevent overgrazing but sadly they don't. Another way we can prevent overgrazing is putting up fences to keep animals in one place. The incorrect use of irrigation causes the build-up of salt in the soil. This is a very good thing to use when done properly. When it is not done properly it causes desertification and sadly this is used in poorer areas and is an incorrect use of irrigation.
