The particular uses or events that have led to Lake Chad shrinking
Climate change is a major contribute to the shrinking of Lake Chad due to the high demand for water. There has also been poor human management through overgrazing and also unsustainable uses of irrigation. This has resulted in replacement in natural vegetation’s and invasive plant species (invasive species is a species that is not native to a specific location). The shrinking of Lake Chad is becoming a bigger problem due to the growing population, the increasing climate change, over fishing and destructive local irrigation techniques. There has also been a significant loss of biodiversity due to desertification occurring.
Over cultivation is the excessive use of farmland which leads to soil exhaustion. Human over use of Lake Chad is causing it to shrink rapidly. It is also shrinking due to the increasingly complex irrigation technique because of the international nature of the desertification.
Overgrazing is when animals are placed in one area and they are not moved from that area. Overgrazing is when animals are grazing grasslands so heavily that the vegetation is then damaged and the ground becomes liable to erosion. Major overgrazing in the region results in a loss of vegetation and serious deforestation which causes a dryer climate. Yet deforestation is another cause of Lake Chad shrinking. Deforestation is mainly caused by the lack of electricity so people rely more on firewood. Deforestation is also caused by the drying climate. If all trees were cut down there would be nothing protecting the soil, therefore this would contribute to the shrinking of Lake Chad.
